In New Jersey when a mortgage or other lien secured by real estate goes into default the foreclosure process begins. The final stage of the foreclosure process is to sell the property at public auction to try and recover what is owed to the mortagee or lien holder.
The county sheriff where the property is located is responsible for conducting the auction. Each NJ county sheriff's department has a different schedule for when sheriff sales are held as well as slightly different conditions.
